New inclinometer sensors and instruments for primary lining deformation measurements for geotechnical monitoring

Are inclinometer and fiber optic sensors the key to more efficient monitoring of geotechnical structures?
During the three-year research project, we developed innovative instrumentation techniques and fiber optic instruments which significantly improve the capabilities of geotechnical monitoring. This new technology enables highly accurate monitoring of deformation and temperature development in underground and retaining structures, as well as in the subsoil of constructions. Thanks to the collected data, we can thoroughly evaluate the condition of the structure’s performance and behavior of the rock massif.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
- The project “Development of fiber optic measurement instruments for underground constructions and retaining structures” carried out in collaboration with SG Geotechnika a.s. and the Faculty of Civil Engineering at CTU in Prague.
- This project was financed with the state support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic under the TREND Program.
ENTRY CONDITIONS
- The application of existing market solutions based on electrical sensors leads to undesirable delays, thus slowing down the construction process.
- Traditional measuring systems do not provide sufficiently detailed and comprehensive real-time information on the condition of the structure.
REQUIREMENTS
- development of innovative fiber optic sensors suitable for geotechnical monitoring
- fiber optic instruments resistant to aggressive environment during construction of underground and retaining structures
- The obtained data provide a basis for extensive evaluation of the structure’s performance and the behavior of the rock massif already during construction
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The main objective of the project was to develop fiber optic instruments resistant to the aggressive environment of underground and retaining structures for real-time monitoring. These instruments will be applied in the detailed monitoring of deformation and temperature development of the structures as well as the behavior of the rock massif, paving the way for early identification of potential risks and optimization of construction processes.
Benefits of the solution compared to conventional methods
I. INSTALLATION DURING CONSTRUCTION
The instruments can be installed during the construction process, eliminating delays and accelerating the entire building process.
II. Detailed Real-Time Monitoring
Continuous monitoring during construction allows for early identification of risks and process optimization. It enables the tracking of a broader range of parameters and provides a comprehensive overview of the condition of the monitored structures and the behavior of the rock massif.
III. Resistance to Aggressive Environments
The fiber optic measuring systems are designed to withstand the demanding conditions of underground and retaining structures.
How did we approach the solution?
We developed revolutionary measurement systems based on Fiber Bragg gratings (FBG), which enabled the monitoring of deformations in the primary linings of underground structures. For measuring deformations in rock massifs and selected geotechnical structures, we designed an innovative FBG inclinometer sensor and a deformation gauge for the root and tendon of pre-stressed strand anchors.
To ensure comprehensive evaluation of data measured by the FBG inclinometer sensor and the primary lining deformation gauge, we provided sophisticated software that allows easy interpretation and visualization of the data.
All results were successfully tested in the geotechnical laboratory of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The new technology has been successfully deployed on real construction sites, including an exploratory gallery for Metro I.D. in Prague and the monitoring of the slope at the Petřín funicular.
